Placing PDFs in InDesign

topic posted Mon, April 16, 2007 - 1:17 AM by  offlineL
This might be more of a Acrobat question than an InDesign question but since I'm mainly working in InDesign, I'll ask here first. Sometimes when I get some PDF files, they have the paper area still on them so within Acrobat I've cropped and trimmed them so the file will be final size to place. On some PDFs I've place though, I'm still getting some of the paper size or some bordering instead of getting the trimmed PDF that I've saved. Is there some setting or something in Acrobat that I need to do also to make sure the PDF places correctly? Any input would be great!

Perhaps the pdf's you've made had bleeds? Check the settings on the export specs window when you make the original pdf.

actually, not all the PDFs are created by me, most are coming from outside sources. Which "some" are done to spec, but most are not. Which is why I'm having to crop them out so when i place them they "should" just fit the pic box, just have to scale it to fit the box and DONE.

when you are importing into InDesign, you should have the option to "Show Import Options". should be a box to check when you are selecting the file you want to import. check that box before you say "ok"

you'll then get another dialouge box with some additional options.

from there you can choose to import your pdf as transparent or not, you can chose whether to import using the cropped area, entire media, to the bleed marks, and there are probably a few other options too.

many (if not all) PDF's retain their original information, no matter what you've cropped it to. depending on the program you are importing into, you'll see that stuff or you wont. but it's easy enough in InDesign to just adjust your frame to re-crop that stuff right back out.

        happy to help!

i've looked before and havent yet found a place to make that a default . . but i cant say i looked at that hard or all that long, cause it's just as easy to check it when i want to, and not when i dont . . .

for most things, you wont need to see your import options . . i just assume leave it and use it when i need it . . .
