Hexachrome printing

what layout or image editing apps support Hexachrome, or hifi, printing? I think QuarkXPress does, or did at some point, but I don't know if any of the Adobe apps support it.

what can you tell me?

Opened font available in Photoshop, but not InDesign

I've opened Palatino (T1) in Suitcase Fusion, all weights, etc. When I'm in inDesign and want to choose Palatino Bold, for instance, it's not available, only the "bold oldstyle figures" that I don't want. There are a few other weights that I don't see as well in inDesign. Yet when I went to Photoshop to see if it was there, no problem. It was open and selectable. So were other missing weights.

Note: if it matters, the truetype version of Palatino is open too (Mac library)

Suggestions?

converting PDFs to InDesign files

hey, I was at Macworld last week and got a chance to visit one of my favorite vendors, a Japan-based company that makes an app to convert PDFs to InDesign files, complete with styles, formatting, and so on:

I love this idea, think it could be incredibly useful, but I have to admit I haven't used the product. Has anyone else heard of it or used it?

If so, is it as great as it seems? If not, maybe I've just made your day.

Flip horizontal/vertical in CS2

Yes, I know that in CS3 the Control Bar has an option to flip an object horizontally or vertically with the click of a button. What is the easiest way for me to do t his in CS2? I work with text often that has to be printed backward but remain in a fixed position relative to crop marks and overlapping text- too complicated to go into right now. The point is I have not found a flip or print backwards option to make this less of a hassle.

Source for common print document templates?

As many times as I've had to create a tri-fold letter-sized document, I can't believe I didn't have a template stored away for the folds (short panel that folds inside). So I'm about to reinvent the wheel.

Today, it occurred to me that somewhere there must be an online source for simple templates that people use all of the time. I have one for business cards that I keep. Anyone know of others?

Resolution of placed images (change-able default)

So lets say I open an image file in Photoshop and tweak it, then convert it to 5" high at 300dpi and save it. Then when I place that file on my document in InDesign, it comes out to ~2" at 100%? What's up?

I know you can change the way the pdf output settings for exporting, but when it's still in InDesign is there a default setting that displays it as it would look at 600dpi or something?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Creating printable documents from a cms-content database

Any ideas on how this could work.? I'd like to design a single or double page print layout, preferably in InDesign, whereby the text and images that were uploaded to display on a client's website could also be used to generate the content for the pdf.

The client would thereby be able to just upload the content once and it be displayed on the website, and create a document to print.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm going to ask in the other design forums too...

Text Disappears From Placed PDFs

Whenever I place certain PDFs into new layouts (and then export to PDF), some of the text on the placed PDF won't so up in the final exported PDF layout. I know my fonts are always embedded; what am I doing wrong?

Creating Outlines---text effect disappears.

I am doing signage in a small graphics department. I use CS3 on a Mac. As a part of the workflow, we convert the text on the final layouts to outlines. We usually upload that file to the printer's FTP site after compressing it with any links. In the process of creating the outlines to text, I find that some effects disappear. In this case, I am losing the Inner Shadow effect of some words. We seem to be able to keep the drop shadow. Does anyone have a workaround for this? I could send the file without converting to outlines along with the fonts I suppose, but the team here doesn't like to do that. They don't want to trouble the printer. I am new and still learning the applications, so any help would be appreciated.

Printing tiles problem

I am blowing up some artwork to poster size (36" x 40") and using the Tile feature in InDesign to do this. The output will be 20 or so 8.5x11 pages that I will tile together to make a whole.

Problem is that I right now I only need two of the pages in the middle that didn't print correctly. When I try to use the "Range" setting in the Print Dialog box, I keep getting an error that reads: "One or more of the pages specified are not valid page names."

Has anyone tried this before and know what the page names are for tiled pages?

It's difficult to describe so let me know if you need more info.

Assistance Req'd: placing multiple page of text

Hi folks. Here's an interesting tidbit I just learned but am having trouble with:

You can place a MSword doc and it will display as formated text only, not like a pdf which looks like its on a piece of paper. When you want to place multiple pages, create a New>Doc in InDesign and select the "Master Text Frame" box option next to # of pages. Then, when you place, hold the shift key in when you click on the blank indd. Voila!

Now here's my problem, it seems to work for the first 15 pages, but I'm trying to place about 25 or 30 pages. The text "auto-flows" right through until page 15, then I get the text box with the little red plus sign in the bottom right corner, indicating more text than can be revealed.

Why oh why won't it just keep going? I made the indd 50 pages long cuz I'll be adding lots more. Any idea what's going on?

placing a multi-page pdf

When you "place", the file selection window that comes up has a checkbox at the bottom called Show Import Options. Check that and when you click on your doc it'll place the first page, when you click a second time in another place it'll place the second page, and so on.

transferring effects between Adobe programs

I've made a logo in Illustrator 10 using two large letters, turned into outlines and then overlapped so they intertwine. There's a slight gradient on the letters. The client wants a hint of a metallic look applied to it. None of the features in Illustrator seem to work. I imported it as a smart object into Photoshop CS2 and applied a slight emboss effect. I want to keep it as a vector. Is it possible to export to Illustrator as a smart object and keep the emboss effect? Or even better would be to save it in some vector format so I could work with it in InDesign CS2.

I'm getting confused by file formats and switching back and forth between programs. What's the best way to keep it as a vector illustration but keep the emboss effect while using it in InDesign or Illustrator? Is this even possible?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Apologies for cross posting.

Grayscale has C,M & Y? B&W newspaper printing?

What's the deal with the color info after you've grayscaled an image that was CMYK? Shouldn't it just be varying amounts of black?

Sending something to be printed in a newspaper for the first time and wondering if I can just export a PDF in greyscale from InDesign(How?) or if not, and I make all the components that I'll place into black and white in Photoshop, is Image>Mode>Grayscale a good way to do it?

The paper prints some things in color, so I wouldn't want it to actually use any of the other color inks if I'm trying to do black and white, correct? There is going to be black in the piece and so I made a background layer that was CMYK=0,0,0,100. Is that the right way to go about it?

Placing PDFs in InDesign

This might be more of a Acrobat question than an InDesign question but since I'm mainly working in InDesign, I'll ask here first. Sometimes when I get some PDF files, they have the paper area still on them so within Acrobat I've cropped and trimmed them so the file will be final size to place. On some PDFs I've place though, I'm still getting some of the paper size or some bordering instead of getting the trimmed PDF that I've saved. Is there some setting or something in Acrobat that I need to do also to make sure the PDF places correctly? Any input would be great!

keyboard shortcuts out of Text Tool??

Bummed that, when using the Text Tool , 'ESC' doesn't shortcut me to 'SELECT' Tool, as it does in the others. Any other fancy trick for it... save having to fumble for my mouse and direct-click out of it?

transparency gradient?

In Photoshop you can use transparency gradients, or layer masks with black/white gradients...is there any way to do this in InDesign? (I'm trying to fade out a grey on black vector pattern background to straight black. Do I have to make the background as a flat 'placeable' file in PS first?)

styles across multi-file books (keeping styles consistent using InDesign Book feature)

Quick Tip:

If you work in Books with multiple file projects, often times you need to update a single style across the book without effecting anything else. InDesign does not allow for this. However if you take your new style into a clean document, making sure to remove anything that is unwanted including swatches, etc... And, it is also important that you only update the most basic level of the style, for instance if you have a character style that is part of a nested paragraph style, only update the character style. Save out this style document. Add this style document to your book. Set the style document as your style default and then synch your whole book to this new style document. By doing this you will only effect the particular style across all documents, and it will update in all instances (inccludng in nested and object styles) with out effectng anything else.

Specializing style documents like this can also work for Swatches, though you can choose to synch only swatches in your book through the synch prefs, its sometimes nice to start with something clean and prepped for a specific purpose.

Placing images in text

1) Can it be placed ONCE and fill the entire word, or do I have to place it individually inside each letter?

b) Can I rotate, scale, etc the image once it's placed inside the text? I know I can move it, but I don't remember the details on what else is possible.

text box and rectangle problem

please excuse me for my plainspeaking ways about this--i'm a self-taught indesigner...i'm working on a newsletter, and i keep running into a problem where i have my text, then i put a rectangle around it, then later, when i try to edit the text and try to click on it, only a cursor for the rectangle appears and it won't let me get into the text box! so i become frustrated and just delete the rectangle so i can get into the text box, then stick the rectangle back on after i'm done editing. why does this happen? it's pretty annoying...

InDesign Lock File

I have InDesign CS2 and found a 'lock file' on my desktop.
It looks similar to an .indd icon, but instead of the butterfly, it has a lock symbol and where the purple/magenta bar usually says CS2 it says lock.
I dont recall deliberately making this file, named 1999. Any idea what it is and if it's safe to delete?

How to convert a newsletter to html format

I would like to know if there's a method to export and/or save a newsletter to a web (html) format?

I have placed several hyperlinks in the document and would like to place on a website. When a vsitor clicks those links, they will be redirected to the respective website(s). I exported the document to a pdf and then saved it as an html file but It doesn't retain its' column format.

flattening a pdf pasted into an InDesign doc

Hi...I'm putting together a doc. that contains shrunken samples of other pdfs made in in-design. I can tell from the way the page rezes in front of me that the smaller versions of the pdfs I'm placing on the page are still composed of separate individual files (still other pdf's!). I'm sure this is making the file much larger than needed. How can I make it so that the pdfs I place on the page are flattened? (Is it just how I saved the first round of pdfs - maybe they're still editable?)

cs2 copy/paste issue

hello! when i copy/paste something in cs2 it pours it back in with a missing font. while it's not a big problem it is time consuming to have to swap the "missing" font back to the right font. anyone else having this problem? i thought perhaps this was a nested style sheet problem. any thoughts?

A question regarding multi-media presentation formats

I have to make 2 portfolios; one for my business services and one for a school project. I would like them to be largely overlapping in content to avoid having to double the work, but...

The business one will be primarily on the web, and the school one will have to be submitted in print.

I am well versed in Photoshop, but not great with Image Ready or slices for making web content. I am also quite proficient in InDesign. I'm *just* starting to learn Dreamweaver.

QUESTION: What's the best way to present both graphics and text content for both web and print without having to construct new files for each format?

I was thinking thinking of using Photoshop/ImageReady to make a file and then save it in two versions (print and web-optimized). Or could I make files in InDesign that could be used for the web, since there will be lots of text?

What page is X on?

Hi there, can anyone tell me how do replace the character X in the following example with a page number?

"For more information see page X"

I'd like the X to automatically (or semi auto) change to the page number a particular item is currently on. Item is a peice of text with a particular para style applied, but I could easily place an inline graphic or some other tag next to it to help find it.

Particularly interested in a non-script method, but happy to try a script too. Any ideas?

Booklet

I want to make a relatively simple booklet in indesign using 8.5x11 paper folded in half. 12 pages long. Printing would be on front and back of the the pages to make a booklet.

These would be folded together in one stack and a staple in the middle. I am taking one long piece of writing and putting it in this format.

Is there a term for what this is called? Does InDesign have 'tools' or ways of doing it that make it easy, for the text to flow properly through the pages? what if i need to add another page, can this be automated.

Does this question make sense? otherwise it seems difficult to manage this type of layout. or tricky at least.

"Based on" Styles, Style management between Vendors, and Font Issues

Hello all,

I love InDesign's styles. I can totally geek out, it is great. The issue is that I am having some serious problems in-house getting people both to understand and use styels at-all/correctly and with vendors mussing up styles and not knowing how to fix them.

Recently I sent out an entire catalog. The Pre-Press vendor somehow did not load fonts, and some of the styles lost their font link, and came out totally screwed up. Most of these issues where with styles that were "Based On" another style. This is a very effective tool in that if a font changes, in any way, at the base level, it changes in all styles based on that style. The new style takes all the characteristics of the base style, the only thing that is different are those things that are changed in the new style (usually alignment or color). Well I thought it was great until this happened. Without elminating the use of "Based On" styles does anyone have any suggestions on how I can manage this better (without plug-ins) to have this remain an effective tool?

Why is everybody so afraid of styles in general? InDesign has finally made possible a life where all type can be consistent throughout, and I think that it is "easily" managed; yet people run away scared. Does anyone have suggestions on how to educate people to use these tools successfully?

Creating editable content PDFs from InDesign.

Im using InDesign 2.0 and have no trouble exporting PDFs for litho printing.

But now I have a project where I need to export a PDF (simple DL 6pp leaflet) that allows the client to edit and input text in Acrobat, then send to print. Trouble is that when I do this the text is only editable line by line. Also I can't seem to embed fonts, only subset them, so Acrobat won't let them change the text. Anyone have any experience in this area?

PDF Image problem

While exporting form Indesign 2 (not CS2) I am getting horrible results on vector drawings. Soeone reset my setting and now I can't seem to get them back !? I don't know what is happening but wuld appreciate the help . And yes i will be upgradinging soon to CS2 !!

why does image turn knock-out in pdf?

hi everybody,
i use indesign mostly for simple all-type or type + vector art layouts for my letterpress work, and when i recently tried to import an image from photoshop, all hell has broken loose. i have been asking for advice in the photoshop tribe, but i think i need some imput from folks who are more expert in ID, so here i am.

here's the story. i scanned a 1-color pen drawing in photoshop, which i will eventually print on colored paper, once i make a plate. i am trying to make a comp for my client with a colored background, so she can see what the finished piece will look like on the colored paper. first i had the problem of figuring out how to separate the drawing from the "white" background in photoshop, because when i imported it into ID it brought the white background with it. so i selected the white by background via select>color range and deleted it. all looks good. so i bring it into indesign, and it looks perfect. then i go to make the pdf, and the image has suddenly become knock-out white with a very thin white frame around it. there wouldn't be any problem if i were printing on white paper--i could have just imported the original file. but i really want to show the client the way it will look on the colored stock.

does anyone have any idea what i may be doing wrong?

CS vs. 2.0

footnote reference numbers

I'm encountering a problem which involves footnotes. When I create or edit a document in MS Word, I use regular numbers for the footnotes. But when my production coordinator then imports the document into InDesign 2 (on a G5 Mac tower), the numbers turn into roman numerals. This happened not only from my computer (which, in my case, I use both a G5 tower and a G4 titanium powerbook), but from another editor's computer, so there must be something happening on the production coordinator's end. Anyone else encounter this or have any idea what's going on? Thanks.

Links Warnings

Hey all, had a question about the links warning setting (if there is one). I have two computers with indesign cs on both. On one machine when I open a file with broken links it gives me a warning right away if I want to "fix" or "don't fix", then I can proceed to view the file. On the other one, when I open a file with broken links I don't get any kind of warning at all, but if I goto the links palette, it shows a warning there with a question mark next to the image name. Is there a setting somewhere in cs that I may have turned off to stop the warning from popping up or do I have to reinstall? and also, I "just" upgraded to tiger, if that helps. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Quark PDFs and InDesign

Hey everybody, I'm having an issue with placed pdfs that were created in quark (either 4.11, 5, or 6). Everything looks great on the final pdf created from InDesign but almost everytime I send it to the printers and they rip it, there's usually an issue with that file, either images dropping out or it just flushing. Is anybody else having this problem or have any answers for this?

characters working wrongly

Hi,

Why im using adobe indesign cs 1, and i can type perfectly words in portuguese like: "médica" and when i type "médica" inside Indesign, i got "me'dica"? My windows is working ok, indesign is the problematic one.

I tried to choose portuguese-brazilian for my text, but even so..didnt work.

What should i do to fix it.

Scripting

Does anybody have any knowledge using Applescript with InDesign. I'm specifically wondering if it's possible to create a script that would automatically replace a low-res FPO version of an image with a Hi-res version of that same image. Any ideas? Anybody?

H&Js for InDesign users who used to be Quark users?

The H&J features in InDesign are fabulous. However, there's not a way to name them and use them by name as done in Quark. Anyone out there know if there's a plug-in to emulate this feature? Perhaps you have a tip or trick to share regarding H&Js. The only thing I can think of is having a master file which has stylesheets assigned with each type of H&J. For example, <3ltr3hyph_just> for 3 letter hypenaton, 3 hypens in a row, justified. Then using this master file generate the real stylesheets. We use over a 100 styles per project. At any time during a project these may have to be adjusted.

CS 3.0 Color match problem

OK... I have yet another problem... please bear with this entirely green newbie question...

I have a page in which the background is black, and I have overlayed an image in which the background is also black. On my screen they match perfectly, but when I print the page the image black is darker than the background black so that I get a slight "box effect" around the image that I want to have blend in with the color of the rest of the page. How do I do this? I checked the image colors and they are set to CMYK as is the background. What am I missing? If it's too involved to answer here, can anyone pojtn to me a particularly good tutorial on the subject? I'm quite puzzled...

CS (3.0) Repagination (Imposition?)

Hi... I'm so new at this it hurts...

I have a file for a 'zine that I need to re-order the pages for so that it will print properly. Right now they are individual pages but I want to re-order them so that they are two-page spreads on legal-size paper so that I can print them, fold them, staple them, and voila!: small magazine. I have been told that I need to install a plug-in to do this (such as InBooklet) but so far all I have found needs at least v3.0.1 and I have 3.0 (on a PC running XP). Any suggestions?

it appears to me that they may be different.

The closest I could come was Kabel, but the 'C' doesn't match

It's me again! How do I unlink a 160 page book?

I have an 160 page book and I am redesigning key pages in it. i want to make a bunch of new master pages, but I can't seem to get them to un-link. I'd actually like to un-thread the whole damned book and make all the text boxes separate so I can re-design the pags and just use the text. HELP!! I am going insane. Everything this client does is by pouring whole books into 160-page docs and it makes me nuts, I usually work on magazines. HELP!! I can't redesign this thing if I can't un-link, or un-thread or whatever they call it in InDesign!!

Preflight blues

Hi,
Here I am, finally finishing preflighting a magazine to get it off to the printer. I am new at managing a whole doc myself. And it's the first multi-page doc I've done in InDesign (but thankfully I have a cookbook right behind it.)

Everything looks fine (mostly) onscreen.

BUT: here goes...

When I did a report, it said 29 of these fonts were "embedded" in PDFs like so:

69 Fonts Used; 0 Missing, 29 Embedded, 0 Incomplete, 0 Protected

These are supposed to be hi-res PDF ads people sent me; I don't have all their fonts. Do I need to include them? They sent them as PDF files.

On Page 15

I told the previous designer to send them to me as OUTLINED EPS files so I wouldn't need all 6 thousand goofy fonts these people put in their menus. They looked outlined when I opened them in Illustrator. But when I looked at these pages in Acrobat they looked bitmappy. Have they been outlined? If so, why do I need the fonts?? Again, these look fine onscreen.

Any assistance you can give me is very appreciated.

Web Page

I would like to save an InDesign file to a web page but that's not one of the options under the "Save As" menu.

I do see where it says "Package for Go Live" but I'm not using GoLive to design my websites, although I could but I like using Dreamweaver.

I would appreciate any assistance in this matter

moving indesign files between os 9 and X?

Hi all,

I am working with some people who want to work on indesign 1.5 files, some people on os x, and some on os 9. So, a person could edit the file on one os, and then pass it on the other. Ultimately the finished file will end up on os x.

I was wondering what problems, if any arise from passing the file back and forth on each platform (is information lost, does formatting become weird, etc?)

any help appreciated!

importing clipping paths

ahh the illustrious clipping paths!
i'm working on a catalog so i've got 500 images to work out.

i've been testing this all afternoon-- and though my clipping paths look good in photoshop-- when i save them out as an eps and bring them into indd they get a funny white edge around them (seen on a colored background). after testing and testing, i found that when i save my clipping paths as tif files and bring them into indd they look good (no white band).

what gives?
i've looked over indd's help- and they say that i can bring in clips that are either eps or tifs. is there something i'm missing? a dialogue box? anyone else have a magic formula for clipping paths in indd?

(oh, and by the way- i've been testing this in quark too-- and damn them... same thing. eps clips used to be -the- way to go... and i get the white banding there too) (sidenote: it's amazing how clunky quark feels after working in indd for the past year :)

"Tinting" a B&W image?

Do you know how I might "tint" the black part of a B&W image? I know I can fiddle with it in Photoshop but in Quark you used to be able to tint the black areas of a greyscale image...

Placing PDF files

Thrilling title, eh?

So while I'm waiting for answers to my question about patterns, maybe someone can help me here:

For this magazine I'm designing, many of the advertisers sent in their ads as .pdf files. I am not used to this. I seem to be able to place them in InD2, but the screen versions are awful, and I do not get the option of improving the, on-screen, like you do with tifs. Shall I convert them to .eps files in Illustrator before placing them? I have no idea what quality these are--how do I tell (except by looking at their K sizes)? Should I open them in Photoshop and make tifs out of 'em?? I'm used to placing ads that arrive in .tif and .eps only.

I hate PDF and my version of Acrobat sucks.

Can you repeat patterns or tile in InDesign?

Hi All, Im quite new here this week...and I'm designing a publication, and I want to vary the border around the cover (think National Geographic) with a little patterned .tif I made, but the file I am using covers the whole page and it's enormous (like 30M) and it's taking forever to load. I am assuming I can line up a whole bunch of small ones but how can I be sure it tiles perfectly? Is there a button for this? I"m in InDesign2.

Hello! I'm waiting for Font Reserve to arrive and it may be another month. Meanwhile I'm using Fontbook. I'm having problems with fonts (that I am not using) that say they are missing. When I try to swap the (invalid) font it won't let me. Anyone else having this problem?

A friend of mine told me that PDF files created from Illustrator can be bad. Adobe Indesign has the same risks? Isnt strange Adobe create PDF and then Illustrator sux to handle with it?

Embeding files

I heard, time ago, that ID would work with graphics and the layout this way:
The .ind file would keep the layout intact, and the images, and graphics would be stored in a folder to make the work faster and making a lightweight file. And not imported into the file.

Im using ID 2.0 and i have a file with 45 pages, pics and etc. The file size is around 120mb. I think no images are being stored in a separate folder.

Im asking:
a) ID always work with images this way, automatically, keep the images in a separated folder? Or you can choose, import into/ or keep separated? Where can i set it?
b) Where is the folder where ill stored the images to be used in the file??
c) where do I set this folder to be the default folder for my work?

I dont know if you are understand, my english is crappy. But thx, since now. :)

opening pagemaker documents

I have a weird dilemma: I have both Pagemaker and In Design CS installed on my computer. My coworker just gave me a zip full of Pagemaker files (we actually still use Pagemaker, but I use In Design for other things), but the docs only open in ID. I tried various ways to open the PM docs in PM, but it refuses to allow me, and ID is set as the default. Is there any way to get around this?

Tips for managing a company switch?

Hi everyone...

I'm working hard to try to get my company (a mid-sized design firm) to migrate to ID3 instead of upgrading Quark to vers. 6.

I've found lots of propaganda in favor of ID3, but still have a lot of resistance to overcome, esp. with my production staff.

Most specifically, how do you all address:

...clients (esp. big ones) still using QXP?
...vendors saying they have problems with ID files?
...concerns with conversion of archived files?

Honestly, if I can get this to happen and replace Clients & Profits with Creative Manager Pro, I can give Classic the heave-ho on our machines and go all-OS X (a thought that fills me with drooling glee ;-) ). The latter is looking imminent...anyone have any useful tidbits on the former?

balancing columns

I think InDesign is a great tool that can do everything PageMaker could and more, but I have a hard time finding some of my PageMaker features in it sometimes.

In PM 7.0, I could choose "Balance Columns" from the Utilities menu after selecting more than one text box and it would balance the lines of text, which helped me lots when laying out newspaper spreads.

Does anyone know how to do this in InDesign?

picture/text frame shapes...

hi.

i have a question about indesign. is it possible to use illustrator art as a picture /text frame? this seems like the most basic feature that adobe would include in the development of this app, but i can't figure out how to do it...

the polygon frame tool is editable in pretty much exactly the same way as the pen tool in illustrator... but when i paste an object from illustrator (say, a simple star shape), the option of converting the contents of the object to picture or text is greyed-out...

this sucks!

any ideas?

separations in InDesign

Hey folks,

I've been using inDesign for about a year now, but only for non-print based output. I just did my first print job on it and couldn't figure out how to check the separations before sending it off to the printer. I noticed that I could delete all but the used colors in the swatch palette, but there was one showing up that was not being used.

This is probably pretty obvious, but I couldn't find anything on it in the help manuals, online, etc.

Any pre-press prep tips along with this are welcome!

I just bought InDesign and I have to put together a very simple book/pamphlet....
we'll just have to see how this goes... this is kind of like a reality show... I have built websites (html, javascript, and some ASP) and am proficient in Photoshop but no experience in this publishing design field....
So you can all laff and cringe at me as I keep u posted on my progress.
